From Jennie Harrod, lead support and communications volunteer MSS IW, MS centre and charity shop, Shanklin:

Although I was delighted to see the magnificent efforts of Shirley and Paul Briggs were recognised in last week’s County Press, (Hamper raffle aids MS charity), I was a little concerned that people who kindly donated prizes and brought tickets were not told how their money would be spent.

The raffle, and profits from the charity shop, in Shanklin, go towards improving the lives of people with, or affected by, MS here on the Island (there are more than 300 people with the condition living here).

We provide grants towards mobility aids and equipment, home modifications, large appliances, respite care and even driving lessons. In 2018, we paid out over £4,000 in grants, including those for a mobility scooter, a rollator (walking frame), adapting a bungalow for a lady with MS to remain independent, and a fridge freezer and washing machine for a young lady with MS who was starting out in her own flat. We are currently processing another £2,000 grant towards a wet room.

Last year we spent £11,000 on providing therapies for people with MS, and we currently we have 45 people with MS requesting our therapy vouchers. We send out £180 worth every six months, which can then be used towards massage, reflexology, acupuncture or hydroactive (water) therapy — all of which have proven benefits in MS. Some of our therapists do home visits.

We also pay for people with MS to attend a swimming club, ten-pin bowling and social lunches once a month, as well as funding taxi journeys for those with MS in wheelchairs to attend them if they have no other transport.
