PEOPLE living near the Newport to Sandown cycle path have been urged to check their sheds and gardens for missing Charlotte Birch.

The search continues today (Friday) for Charlotte, 44, also known as Charlotte Alder, who went missing from St Mary's Hospital on Wednesday afternoon.

Isle of Wight police and Wight SAR volunteers are searching the cycle path following a sighting yesterday.

A police spokesperson said: "As we mentioned yesterday, we had a sighting on the cycle path between Newport and Sandown, which is used a lot by cyclists and dog walkers.

"We are searching this area again today but we are keen for people who live along this long stretch, at Blackwater, Merstone and Arreton, to check any sheds or outbuildings that you might have.

"This is a large area to search and while we are out with our colleagues from Wight SAR your help will be invaluable, carefully searching any buildings you have, behind bins, under vehicles and in gardens.

"It has been particularly cold over the past two days, so she may have sought shelter.

"Please call us on 101, quoting 44190010676 with any information. In an emergency call 999."

Yesterday' Charlotte's family said the response from members of the public who had supported the search was 'overwhelming.'

Charlotte left hospital before she was discharged, prompting increasing concern for her welfare.

She left on foot and was last seen wearing a black speckled cardigan, a pink top and green trousers, which were provided by the hospital, and black boots with a fur trim.

She is described as white, 5ft 6ins tall, with a slim build, shoulder length brown hair and glasses.
