A DRINK driver who crashed into traffic lights in Northwood has been banned from driving.

David Stathers, 61, of Newport Road, Northwood, crashed into the central reservation of the pelican crossing on Newport Road near the Horseshoe Inn.

Police were alerted to the crash on December 21 and carried out a roadside breath test on Stathers, who was just short of three times over the drink drive limit, Vivian Ducie, prosecuting said.

Stathers admitted drink driving and was sentenced to a 12 month community order with 20 days rehabilitation, a £50 fine and a 25 month driving ban.

He was also ordered to pay a £50 surcharge and £85 court costs.

For Stathers, Barry Arnett said that his client was ashamed of what happened.

"He lives near to where his car was and went to get clothes out of the car and inexplicably drove.

"He is very embarrassed."
