THERE is a new leader for a Hampshire and Isle of Wight health care system.

A new independent chair, Lena Samuels, has been appointed to the Sustainability and Transformation Partnership (STP) — a partnership of 21 statutory NHS and local authority organisations across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.

Born and educated in London, Lena is the current chair of South Central Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust.

She was previously a non-executive director with University Hospital Southampton where she was responsible for patient safety, international health and equality and diversity.

She started her career as a lecturer in further and higher education and managed a training centre in London for young people at risk of exclusion.

She has also worked in broadcasting and delivered training in leadership, human rights and child protection on behalf of organisations such as the National Crime Agency, UNICEF and UN Women.

Ms Samuels said: "I have the privilege of taking on the role of interim chair at a time when there are positive opportunities to shape health in a way that meets the needs of our local population through enhanced partnership working.

"I look forward to working together with colleagues across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, where we will have the opportunity to share best practice, innovate and care for patients in the best possible way."

Senior responsible officer, Richard Samuel, said: "I am delighted to announce Lena’s appointment. She is already playing a key leadership role in the Hampshire and Isle of Wight system and I look forward to working more closely with her as we transform services for our local population."
