HOMELESS Matthew Thomas was told by Isle of Wight magistrates he was drinking in the last chance saloon after he was given a 12-week suspended jail term after admitting using threatening and abusive behaviour towards a couple.

The 41-year-old hurled abuse at the man and woman who lived at Fellowship House, Ryde, on November 30 and also kicked at a door before police arrived.

A member of staff also saw Thomas, who had previously been a resident at the shelter, throw a bike into the road, said Ann Smout, prosecuting.

The court heard that at the time of the offence, Thomas was serving a 12-month community order.

For Thomas, Barry Arnett said his client accepted his behaviour was inappropriate.

He added Thomas knew that if he did not sort out his drinking, drink would win the battle.

As well as a suspended jail term, magistrates ordered him to pay a £115 surcharge but did not order any costs.
