A DRUNK driver said she could not remember driving her car over the edge of a cliff in Ventnor.

Laura Ciampa-Buckley, 29, of Castle Close, appeared before Isle of Wight Magistrates' Court today (Friday) charged with drink driving.

She pleaded guilty to a single charge of having 216mgs of alcohol in 100mls of blood while driving — the legal limit is 80mgs.

The court heard Ciampa-Buckley had driven to meet a friend on the evening of September 25, 2018 but that friend did not show up.

Instead, she saw other friends and decided to have a few drinks in the pub.

She planned to walk to her home 25 minutes away, but drank more than she anticipated and could not recall anything about the incident until she woke up on a stretcher at the scene.

Prosecuting, Reginald Withey, said: "At the time responders thought she was seriously injured, but after the defendant got out of the car it was found her injuries were minor and she was taken to hospital where a blood sample was taken."

For Ciampa-Buckley, Keith Verrinder said: "This incident is something she hasn't made a habit of.

"She made an arrangement to collect some money, the person who she made that arrangement with didn't turn up.

"Then she met with some friends and decided to have a drink. She intended to walk home.

"But she had more drinks than she expected to and somehow ended up driving home. She doesn't remember the circumstances that led to her driving over the edge."

Magistrate Mark Couch sentenced Ciampa-Buckley to a 12 month community order, she must complete 80 hours of unpaid work, is disqualified from driving for two years, and must pay £85 in costs and an £85 sur charge.
