CHARD Carnival 2019 could be thrown into jeopardy if more volunteers are not found to help the event stay running.

The carnival committee chairman, Jason Baker, told a packed Guildhall that if they unable to find more people willing to come forward, then they "will be unable to put the carnival on this year."

The news came as Mr Baker handed out the funds raised from last year's event to local groups and good causes.

More than £3,500 was handed to representatives scouts and guides, schools, sports clubs and charities.

Mr Baker said: "We are holding our AGM on Sunday (January 27) at 7.30pm at The Lordleaze Hotel and would welcome new members to join our committee.

"We do not wish to cause alarm, but we are a small committee and struggle to cover all of the jobs that need doing, especially on carnival day.

"We are now at the point that if we do not have more people to help, especially on Chard Carnival evening, we will be unable to put the carnival on this year."

This year's Chard Carnival is scheduled to be on October 12.
