TROUBLE has flared outside McDonald's in Newport again this afternoon (Tuesday 22).

There is a large police presence currently outside the restaurant and neighbouring Starbucks in the centre of town.

Two witnesses at the scene, who did not wish to be named, said they saw someone detained in the back of a police van.

UPDATE: A spokeswoman for Hampshire Constabulary said: "I can confirm two people were detained for public order offences."

The pair are currently being processed through custody and more details will be released as we get it.

UPDATE (noon, Jan 23):

Hampshire Constabulary confirmed: "We were alerted to a public order incident on St James’ Street in Newport shortly after 4pm.
"Two 16-year-old boys from the Isle of Wight were arrested on suspicion of failing to comply with a section 35 direction excluding a person from an area.
"In addition one of the teenagers was also arrested on suspicion of using threatening or abusive words or behaviour likely to cause harassment, alarm, or distress."
Both teenagers have been released without charge, but remain under investigation.
