FRESHWATER Parish Council has reacted with 'amazement' after someone cut down two wooden posts at the front of Old School Close.

The posts were put up to stop vehicular access to Queens Road from that point, due to the proximity to the footpath leading to Camp Road which is used by many pedestrians and residents.

Parish council chair Gill Kennett said: "Not only did someone cut them down, they then filled in the holes with Tarmac. We were amazed when we found out.

"The posts were put there for a reason, to keep pedestrians safe when using the footpath plus ensuring there was just one access onto Queens Road from Old School Close and Windmill Lane for motorists.

"We questioned the residents, but they said it happened in the middle of a Sunday night in the pouring rain and they didn't see anyone do it. The person must have been pretty determined.

"Now, we are going to have to go back and dig up the Tarmac and put the posts back it.

"We estimate, with labour, they will cost ratepayers £200 to £300 to replace.

"It is just a selfish act by someone who has decided they want to get access onto the road that little bit quicker irrespective of the safety of others."

Police have been informed.
