A well-known amateur footballer and manager, who was involved with various Isle of Wight clubs, has died aged 84.
Trevor Ernest Kings was born at St Mary’s Hospital and was brought up in East Cowes.
After finishing school, Trevor started his working life at John Samuel White’s shipyard before working as a meter reader for Southern Electric, where he worked until his retirement.
Trevor met his future wife, Daphne, at dance classes and were married on March 28, 1959, at Holy Trinity Church in Ryde after getting engaged the year before.
Football was Trevor’s life, following both his Portsmouth and Daphne’s Manchester United.
He was also a well-known amateur Island footballer, starting at East Cowes Vics at age 15, followed by stints with West Wight and Brading Town, retiring at age 30.
Trevor would recall a running joke throughout his life, stemming from a time an Everton scout attended one of his matches, saying he was ‘still waiting for the call’.
Trevor went on to manage Island sides Sandown, Brading, Binstead and Seaview.
In 2009, Trevor and Daphne celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at Old Trafford, the home of Manchester United, securing hospitality tickets for the Red Devil’s home league match against Aston Villa.
Their anniversary was featured in the match programme, and Manchester United presented them with a cake.
Trevor died on August 5, leaving behind his daughter, two grandchildren, great-grandson and wife of 64 years.
His funeral service will take place at 3.35pm on Thursday, August 31, at the Isle of Wight Crematorium.
