A 'habitual thief' has been jailed after he burgled an Isle of Wight pharmacy and stole prescription drugs.

Daniel Kilshaw, of Ventnor High Street, pleaded guilty to burglary at the Isle of Wight Magistrates' Court on Wednesday (April 24).

In the early hours of April 19, the 43-year-old smashed a window and entered Jhoots Pharmacy on Albert Street.

Police said Kilshaw, described as a 'habitual thief', stole a quantity of prescription drugs.

The burglary was committed whilst Kilshaw was subject to a community order and conditional discharge, both of which had been handed to him by magistrates earlier this month for separate theft offences.

Magistrates handed Kilshaw a six-month custodial sentence.

A spokesperson from IW police said: "We have been relentlessly pursuing shoplifters and retail criminals to ensure businesses and their staff on the Island are safer and feel safer.

"Retail workers are part of the community, and repeat offenders in particular create an environment of fear for many staff members, leaving them to feel unsafe in their own workplace."
