Disruption is likely in and around an Isle of Wight town centre from next week, as works begin on a main route into the town.

From Tuesday, May 7, nine days of roadworks will get underway at Church Litten, Newport.

Island Roads has said it is phasing the project, ensuring access to Morrisons store and petrol station and to Marks and Spencer, will be maintained at all times.

Pedestrian and emergency service vehicle access will also be maintained and the road will be opened at weekends if work progress allows, and it is safe to do so.

During the first phase of works, vehicles will not be able to turn left from Medina Avenue into Church Litten.

It means, if approaching from the west, vehicles will have to go straight ahead, go round St George’s Roundabout and then turn right into Church Litten.

The works will take place during the day between 7am and 5pm.

The second phase will see the whole road shut, with access only to Morrisons and Marks and Spencer.

A spokesperson for Island Roads said: "We recognise that these improvement works may cause some inconvenience for residents and businesses, but we hope any disruption will be offset by the long-term improvements we are making.

"We would like to thank you in advance for your assistance in enabling us to complete these works.
