Detectives have launched a murder investigation after a man died more than a week after being assaulted in Co Down.

Ryan Macrae, 32, was attacked in Portaferry shortly before 1am on Sunday October 14.

A 19-year-old man initially charged with grievous bodily harm has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

He was taken to Musgrave Serious Crime Suite in Belfast for questioning.

Another man, aged 28, was also charged with grievous bodily harm following the assault.

On Wednesday, PSNI Detective Inspector Deborah Eakin said: “Following the incident the victim was admitted to hospital and unfortunately he subsequently passed away last night.

“Two people were charged following the incident and a 19-year-old man has now been further arrested on suspicion of Ryan’s murder.

“I would appeal to anyone who was present at the scene or who attempted to assist the victim after the attack in Church Street at 1am on Sunday October 14 2018 to contact detectives in Musgrave on the non-emergency number 101, quoting reference 84 14/10/2018. Alternatively, information can also be provided to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”

Alliance Party Assembly member Kellie Armstrong expressed her sympathies.

“Condolences to the family and friends of the young man who sadly has died from his injuries following an incident in Portaferry on Sunday 14th October,” she tweeted.

Ms Armstrong urged anyone with information to contact the police.
