Finchley ABC's Ashley Sexton and Joe Smyth are through to the finals of the National Schools Boxing Championships on March 9 following convincing wins at the National Sports Centre, Crystal Palace, on Saturday.

Fast-improving Sexton, 13, gained his seventh straight win with a unanimous points decision over Stephen Ockenden (Sporting Ring, Hampshire) in their class A 45kg semi-final.

Smyth, 16, seeking to win his second national title in three years, proved too strong for Nathan Nuria (Devonport ABC, Dorset) in their Senior 67kg encounter, and the referee called a halt in the third round. Gary Barker (Ravenscroft School, Barnet), bidding to repeat his national title triumph of last year, lost on points.

On Thursday, Finchley sent four boxers to the Angel ABC show on Thursday, and three won. Simon McDonnagh made it three wins in a row with a unanimous points verdict against John Tubridy (St Peters) and Danny Murphy's non-stop aggression was too much for James Wilson (Marble Lane ABC), and the bout was stopped in the second round.

Dudley Ojuederie (Finchley) was in a hurry gainst Daniel Davis (Angel), who took two standing counts, before the bout was stopped inside a minute.

Louis Brown was Finchley's defeated boxer.
