Shaftesbury Barnet sprint star Abi Oyepitan, 100m silver medallist in the European U23 Championships in Holland last month, started well in her quest for gold in the World Student Games in Beijing.

Abi, the fastest woman in Britain this year with 11.29sec, was close to that, running 11.31sec in the first round and then 11.47sec.

Shaftesbury's Lee McConnell progressed in the 400m with 52.99sec in the first round.

Shaftesbury scored team and individual successes in the Veterans National 5K Road Race at Milton Keynes on Saturday.

Joanne Newcome was the winner in 17min 21sec. With Sally Ann Cox fourth (17min 45 sec) and Kate Armstrong ninth (18.37), Shaftesbury were easy winners.

Gill Morgan came 31st (21.59), while Betty Forster won the over-70s title in 28min 28sec.
