Buxton Hitmen 41, Isle of Wight Warriors 49

IN the sunshine of the Derbyshire Dales the Isle of Wight Wightlink Warriors roared to a rare win on their travels in speedway's National League yesterday (Sunday).

The Warriors and travelling support celebrated their first win on the road since October 2016.

Isle of Wight County Press:

Without Scott Campos and Jamie Bursill in the squad, the Warriors arrived at the home of the league’s basement club to find the Hitmen without former Warrior James Cockle in their line-up.

After the first three heats, the scores were even.

But Warriors stars Ben Morley and Alfie Bowtell, well backed up by Danno Verge, Shaun Tedham, Chris Widman and guest reserve Dale Lamb, began to take advantage of the Hitmen's reserve riders failing to make an impact.

Isle of Wight County Press:

Warriors’ co-promoter Barry Bishop was delighted with the Islanders' result and performance.

“That was magnificent. When we saw the team changes to the Hitmen and knew we were missing Scott, we thought we might be up against it, but all the boys were marvellous and I just couldn’t single one out above another," said Bishop.

Isle of Wight County Press:

"After Buxton won at our place last year and effectively handed us the wooden spoon, it was only fair we returned the compliment this season.

"We will move on now to our September Spectacularon on Thursday night to close our season and present a meeting packed full of top quality racing, fun, games and seasonal good-byes — oh, and I’ll be thrashing Tedham on the track in our special challenge.”

SCORERS

Warriors: Alfie Bowtell 13+1, Chris Widman 3+3, Danno Verge 9, Ben Morley 14, Dale Lamb 5, Shaun Tedham 5+2.
