FAWLEY 0, NEWPORT 2

NEWPORT got back to winning ways in Sydenhams Wessex Division 1 — but they left it late with striker Jared Wetherick scoring a superb brace to end a run of three straight league defeats.

Newport travelled with a predominantly young side, which welcomed experienced hit-man Wetherick back into the fold after missing the last three matches, and 16 year old Ben Snow on the bench.

Ben joined Newport Youth as a nine-year-old — and has been at the club ever since.

Last year, Ben was a member of Newport's all-conquering Hampshire under-16s side.

The game itself remained goalless until the 86th minute, when Wetherick broke the deadlock with a powerful volley from close range.

Fawley were reeling and conceded the second when Wetherick smashed the ball in from outside the penalty area in the final minute.

The win hoisted Newport up five places to ninth place.

Newport: Hall, Harmer, Lamb, Barron, Younie, Yates, Wright, Craig, Wetherick, Holmes, Fleming. Subs: Powell, Ricketts, Marchbank, Gwilliam, Snow.

Port host second-bottom Ringwood Town at St George's Park on Saturday, kick-off 3pm.

With it being National Non-League Day on Saturday, Port will be using the opportunity to raise awareness of grass roots football — and cash for Prostate Cancer UK, who say a man dies of the disease in the UK every 45 minutes.

Always scheduled to coincide with an international football break, Non-League Day provides a platform for clubs to promote the importance of affordable volunteer-led community football, while giving fans across
the country the chance to show support for their local non-league side.

Newport will offer free admission to their Wessex League match against Ringwood Town to anyone from the following groups — members of the armed services and members of the emergency services, including lifeboat and coastguard employees of the NHS.

Instead of paying admission to enter the ground, all these people have to do is show their workplace ID, such as a badge, warrant card, ID card etc.
