AN early goal by Cowes Sports was — as it was in last week's match — just enough to take the points against Andover New Street in the Sydenhams Wessex Premier.

It was Jacob Jarvis who got on the score sheet for the Yachtsmen, poking it home at close range from a superb Gareth Bricknell free kick.

The win moved Cowes back into the top five for the first time in a month.

Newport could only draw 2-2 with second-bottom Ringwood Town at St George's Park in Sydenhams Wessex Division 1.

Liam Triggs opened the scoring for Port on ten minutes after he had dribbled past five Ringwood players.

Ringwood equalised, but Newport regained the lead on 70 minutes through substitute Louie Fleming, who rounded the keeper to score having only been on the pitch five minutes.

But with three minutes remaining, Ringwood equalised again.

Newport remain ninth and could have moved up to seventh had they hung on to a win.

Also in Division 1, it was an afternoon to forget for East Cowes Vics, hammered 6-1 at home to high-flyers Amesbury Town.

Amesbury were two-up after only 12 minutes and should have been 3-0 down just before Vics pulled one back through Elias Ahmed.

It was no more than Vics deserved after they came back into the game — a clinical side-footed finish from a sweeping move down the left, crossed superbly by Jimmi Burton.

After the break, the first ten minutes were very scrappy with neither side able to string two decent passes together.

But on 59 minutes, poor defending allowed Amesbury to go 3-1 up when a pass from the right into the six-yard box was hit into the roof of the net from three yards out.

Amesbury's three other goals all came from poor defending as well, with the fourth and sixth scored from headers, direct from corners.

The fifth was down to poor goalkeeping by Will Hunt who failed to smother a weak shot from the left as he tried to close the gap.

Vics, with no win in seven in all competitions, slip into the bottom four for the first time this season.

In the Harwoods Isle of Wight Saturday League Division 1, Whitecroft & Barton were held to a 1-1 draw at home to improving Brading Town, while in Division 2, in the clash of the top two, Bembridge beat Ryde Saints 5-2 at Steyne Park.
