Sizeable onshore surf and strong winds at Compton Bay lead to tough competition and knock-out heats at the Dave Gray Memorial Surf Competition.

The juniors proved they could hold their own in the powerful conditions and the final was a close-fought affair, but Henry Copeland stole the win.

In the open division, fitness played a big part as the strengthening winds made for some long paddles. Although no one would bet against Joe Truman in tricky Compton conditions, Matt Harwood managed to put together the best two waves and leave Joe in second.

The ladies also competed fiercely for their title in a straight final. Becky Apelgren surfed to gold in an incredibly tight contest.

James Ranson, chairman of the IW Surf Club, said: β€œA massive thanks to all who helped make this a success.

β€œIt was great to see so many kids taking to the water. These guys and girls are the future of the sport and every one of them showed grit, determination and a love for the ocean.”
