JUNIOR rowers of Ryde Rowing Club appeared to benefit greatly from having a few weeks’ break from competition by producing some impressive results in the West Country.

Following the completion of the Hants & Dorset Amateur Rowing Association season, the Wightlink-sponsored junior squad embarked on their winter race programme with a trip to Cornwall to compete in the Dart-Totnes Rowing Club Autumn Head.

The young Isle of Wight talents, taking on a 3km course on the River Dart, raced over three divisions.Isle of Wight County Press:

Ryde Rowing Club single sculler Tye Cameron, who performed well in his race and in the fours.

The best result came from the boys’ coastal junior coxed four of Austin Smith, Tye Cameron, Ben Saunders, Tom Starkey and coxswain, Dan Sanderson, who raced in the men’s senior C section in Division 1 and finished second.

All four rowers raced again in later divisions, with Ben and Tom racing as a men’s novice double in Division 3 — rowing superbly again to achieve another second place, behind the host club.

Austin and Tye also competed in the men’s senior C single sculls races in Division 2, with Austin finishing fourth and Tye, sixth.

A boys’ J15 crew of Harry Jones, Jonah Lewin, Gulliver Roghan and Paddy Kearney, with Sanderson coxing again, competed in the men’s novice fours in Division 2, finishing in third — an excellent performance from this newly-formed and inexperienced crew.

Another young and relatively inexperienced crew of Emily Davies and Poppy Starkey competed in a girls’ J15 double in Division 1 and performed well to finish a creditable fourth.
