ISLE of Wight woman Lottie Laidler has become a national star in a fast-growing new sport based on American football.

The 23 year old is celebrating after her team became UK national champions in the sport of flag football, in which instead of tackling players, the defensive team removes a flag from the person carrying the ball.

Lottie Laidler is part of the Coventry Cougars team, which beat the Sheffield Giants 67-12 in a thrilling final.

She started playing the fast-paced game at Sheffield University and eventually earned her place on the Cougars team, which is established in European competition.

“I’m so proud. Our team has worked so hard this season, so it is wonderful all the training has paid off,” said Lottie, of Ryde.

“I really enjoy playing, but it wouldn’t be possible without Wightlink’s support.

“I’m working hard to develop my game and improve as a player to retain my position on the GB flag football squad.

“Flag football is a sport I hope will make it into the Olympics one day.”

Lottie fits training in around her work with First Act theatre group and as a personal care assistant.

She also works part-time as a gym instructor for 1Leisure.
