From Phil Cave, Newport:

Can I make a suggestion to the Isle of Wight Council and Island Roads about the plans for pedestrianisation and change of traffic flows in Newport and Ventnor?

Before spending millions of pounds on these schemes, is it not feasible to have a “dry run” on both ideas.

For a limited amount of time, say six months, close the roads the council want to change and also divert traffic as is in the plans.

This could be done by temporary traffic lights, road closure signs and change of flow where the flow is proposed to be changed.

If, at the end of the trial period, the changes are deemed a success go ahead but if the plans have been a disaster go back to as the roads are now.

Also at the end of the trial period, consult all people directly affected, including businesses and householders and seek their suggestions.

To spend £9 million plus in today’s financial climate on plans that seem like a stab in the dark does not make sense without a trial period.
