Mayday Hospital's demolition team erased the final hurdle standing between them and a new £22.6 million development when they turned this towering 30m chimney to dust on Tuesday.
The operation on October 23 followed the demolition of a similar 18m structure on September 7, which launched the process of separating these two familiar Croydon landmarks.
In their place Mayday bosses propose to build a new ward block and day surgery unit, which will house the services currently provided under the roof of Mayday's outdated Victorian buildings.
In total there will be 222 new beds and a day care facility with four full-size operating theatres and 17 recovery beds.
The redundant flues were installed in 1983 as part of the London Wing developments, and served as vents for the hospital's in-cinerator and boiler.
