A SHANKLIN man spent the night in the cells after drunkenly shouting abuse at police, a court heard.

Liam Gustar, 23, of Oaklyn Gardens, admitted being drunk and disorderly at Church Litten, Newport, when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates' Court today (Friday).

Police were called to Church Litten on August 22 at 11.35pm, and found Gustar to be 'in drink', said Vivian Ducie, prosecuting.

Gustar was released but shouted abuse towards the officers as he was leaving, resulting in him being detained and spending the night in the cells.

For Gustar, Barry Arnett said his client remembered police saying he was 'wanted' but let him go, prompting him to shout 'mothers' at them.

Magistrates imposed a 12 month conditional discharge on Gustar and told him to pay £85 costs and a surcharge of £20.
