A 'positive response' has followed a meeting organised by Shorwell Parish Council to find someone willing to take over the village post office and shop.

The Isle of Wight business was closed following the recent sudden death of proprietor Marian Challoner, who had run the post office with husband Cal for 32 years.

Shorwell parish clerk, Mike Davies, said: "The meeting was attended by almost 50 people and the response was very positive.

"There has been a surprising number of responses from people wishing to run such a business.

"We are hoping one of these responses could lead to the re-opening of the shop, pending an application to re-instate the post office licence."

Meanwhile, the parish council is looking to raise £5,000 to prevent the threat of sale or development of part of the village recreation ground.

Mike added: "An agreement has been reached by council to buy the piece of land to protect this important amenity for the area.

"It is considered borrowing to fund this would only increase the total cost, so the parish council will cover the purchase and legal fees by utilising its reserves.

"This will have the effect of limiting what we are able to do in the short term.

"Our councillors are hoping local residents, particularly those who use the facility or would have been affected by any potential development, will be prepared to make a small donation, organise a fund raising event or take on some form of sponsorship to raise £5,000."
