ISLE OF WIGHT HOCKEY CLUB

THERE was a mixed set of results for the Island's men's and ladies' hockey teams at the weekend.  

                  ISLE OF WIGHT LADIES I 1, SOUTHAMPTON UNIVERSITY 2
THE ladies suffered a disappointing loss in their top of the table clash. 

The Island opened the scoring when Lola Marfleet finished easily at the far post. 

But Southampton hit back, catching the defence on the run, resulting in a penalty corner.

Their shot bobbled onto the edge of Jamie Payne’s stick — deflecting the ball and evading the pads of goalkeeper Tia Shutler.

Despite pinpoint passing accuracy from centre back, Kirsty Fraser, Katy Ednay could not convert. 

Southampton scored in the final five minutes, despite the Island’s best efforts to find an equaliser.

                       ISLE OF WIGHT MEN I 10, SWANAGE & WAREHAM 2
THE men’s first team earned an impressive double-digit win.

The Islanders piled on pressure from the start and, from a short corner, Tom Turney scored. 

Isle of Wight continued to win short corners — all slotted home with conviction. 

Stephen Woodford hit the fourth, and Aaron Hoare scored a drag flick.

Just before the break, prolific Adam Payne bagged a first half hat-trick. 

In the second half, the visitors scored twice inside ten minutes, giving them a fighting chance. 

But Isle of Wight found their rhythm again, which led to Hoare and Samuel Challis scoring again.

At the end, Payne scored the ninth and tenth goals with reverse shots.

                           HAMBLE LADIES 5, ISLE OF WIGHT LADIES II 4
THE ladies’ seconds had a tough game and Hamble opened the scoring. 

The Island levelled when a free hit into the D was shot in by Lottie Green.

After earning a short corner, Isle of Wight took the lead with an Ally Townend strike. 

Isle of Wight continued to attack through Sophie Parkhouse, who found Anya Clarke to slot the ball home.

The second half saw Hamble gain the advantage.

A succession of short corners put pressure on the Island’s defence and they added another three goals to their tally.

The Isle of Wight continued to battle and clawed a goal back through Townend again.

                              ALTON MEN 3, ISLE OF WIGHT MEN II 1
AFTER the hosts went into a quick 2-0, Tom Young squandered many chances to bring the Island back into the game.

From a short corner, Tomas Turjanica scored, but Alton killed the game off for the Isle of Wight near the end.
