Stiff Records is behind some of the biggest musical artists of all time: Elvis Costello, The Pogues, Ian Dury and the Blockheads, The Damned. The list is endless.

UPDATE: This event has been postponed

On Friday, Dave Robinson, the label's original co-founder, visits the Isle of Wight and he will be joined by Ryde punk band, X-Directory.

"I haven’t been down to the Island for a while and I’m looking forward to it," Dave said.

"The Isle of Wight sounds like the place to be."

Dave is currently on tour with five-piece Hardwicke Circus as well as The Blockheads and he calls me from Carlisle.

"I listen to what I class as good music and most of that passes under the radar nowadays.

"The Blockheads have surprised me with how good they are."

Dave's Quay Arts appearance has been organised by Newport's AAA Records.

How can you see Stiff Records' Dave Robinson on the Isle of Wight

His show is billed as a chance to learn about the singles, the artists who recorded them and life on the road with Jimi Hendrix - Dave used to be his tour manager.

He will reveal some of the secrets behind the British independent label, formed in London in the 1970s alongside Jake Riviera.

Active from 1976 to 1986, Stiff Records was reactivated in 2007 - Madness, Nick Lowe and Kirsty MacColl are among the household names linked to it.

I asked Dave how you set about signing so many legends.

"He was so influential and so necessary for a huge segment of the 70s and 80s."

Before Stiff Records, Dave was Jimi Hendrix's tour manager but he didn’t manage to catch Jimi’s legendary 1970 Isle of Wight Festival performance - the pair had parted company in 1969.

These days, he's still discovering new bands.

"I look after Hardwicke Circus - a rock and roll band with melodies and acoustic music.

"They are getting a bit of a reputation.

"With all the streaming services, it’s hard to know how to launch a new group.

"You really have to do a lot of live work."
