Police have revealed how many drivers were caught committing offences, including speeding and drug driving, on the Isle of Wight last month.

Officers from the Safer Roads Unit were out and about on the Island’s roads last month, targeting speeding offences at various locations.

Throughout May, police caught 279 speeding drivers during visits to 23 different locations across the Island on 33 separate occasions.

Speeding is one of the leading causes of serious and fatal injury collisions, said the force.

A spokesperson from the Safer Roads Unit said: “We know poor driving standards, including speeding, are a concern to local residents on the Island.

“We are committed to taking action against those who put road users at risk.”

Meanwhile, over the last 15 days, the Road Policing Unit (RPU) has caught multiple drivers on the Island’s roads in breach of the ‘fatal four’ and other offences.

The fatal four are speeding, drink and drug driving, not wearing a seat belt and using a mobile phone while driving.

During the last fortnight, police have caught seven drivers using a mobile phone, two with no insurance, four drug drivers, and one each for lack of due care and attention, driving without a licence, carrying a dangerous load and a red traffic light offence.

There were also several drivers caught committing ‘smaller offences’, including issues with tints and number plates.

Andy, from the RPU, said: “These enforcements have happened all over our Island. I try to vary my patrol area to capture as many towns, villages and hamlets as possible.

“With the sun shining across the Island, please make sure that you are not drink or drug-driving. Know your limits.”
