A new Isle of Wight cafe has opened in central Newport and is already proving popular, with customers praising the eateries' fair pricing and good food.

CG’s Cafe in Newport Bus Station opened earlier this month, based out of the previous home of the Cornerstop Cafe.

Now under a new regime, with a fresh new look, the cafe is the second Newport business owned by husband-and-wife team Callum and Hannah Grant.

Boasting loaded breakfast and lunch menus, the cafe also offers 'super foods', including a full macro breakdown with calories per portion (see below).

Working in hospitality for half his life, starting as a KP in his teens, Callum was previously head chef at several Island eateries, including The Fishbourne and The Stag, along with numerous cheffing roles at other pubs and restaurants.

He has fond memories of cooking with his nan when he was a child and had always hoped one day to own his own pub or restaurant.

Callum reassessed and decided to open a cafe following the Covid-19 pandemic, the economic situation and family reasons.

Callum told the County Press: “My kids would miss me during dinner time, so a cafe seemed perfect, as I would much rather enjoy my time with them.

“But, it is a big step, going from head chef to this!”

The other half of the team, Hannah, has been a dog groomer for most of her life and owns Pampered Paws on Newport’s St James’ Streets.

Callum added: “It’s a bit of a strange combination of businesses, cafe and dog groomer, but it’s what we’re good at!”

CG’s Cafe will continue with its current trial menu through the summer before a menu change in October, as the winter season begins.

Pending a permit, Callum and Hannah hope to offer outside seating but do not expect this to become a reality this year.

Bus drivers can enjoy a 10 per cent discount, and, so far, there has been a good response.

The cafe is open from 8am to 3pm from Tuesday to Saturday.
