Sadly, there is nothing much fun about getting older. Your joints ache, you sound like a bowl of rice crispies when you move, and you have pains where you've never had pain before.

Sadly, we cannot halt the passing of the years, and there must be an element of being totally grateful that we are still alive, but at the same time, we all want to maintain our youthful appearance for as long as humanly possible.

Now, as vampires aren't real, you can forget everything you saw on Twilight; instead, you'll just have to take the anti-ageing process into your own hands.

Don't worry; we've got five great tips to keep you looking youthful once you hit 40.

1. Do NOT become a Yeti

For men, hair is an inevitable part of the ageing process. Generally, you will lose your hair and need to embrace your inner Vin Diesel, or you will go grey. Grey hair can be dyed, but you need to bear in mind that if it is not done well, it screams an older man trying to look younger, and honestly, we have seen better looks.

Embracing your inner silver fox is the on-trend way to go, but you must ensure that you keep your locks groomed. Long grey ponytails look shambolic, so a short, smart cut is more likely to give you a youthful edge. Hair transplants are an option and can restore your luscious locks, but there is no need to resort to such desperate measures when you can embrace what you already have.

Body hair is the next issue and seriously needs to be taken care of to avoid looking like a yeti. Old men are stereotyped as having grey hairs sprouting from their nostrils and their ears, and it's not a turn-on. It's time to invest in the nose hair trimmer and get it under control.

Older men with beards and moustaches can look very youthful and distinguished, provided they are kept groomed and tidy. Finally, do not forget the eyebrows; there is nothing worse than a dishevelled caterpillar crawling above each eye, so make sure that your barber keeps them in check when you have your haircut.

2. Do eat well and exercise regularly

We are all living busy lifestyles, and the availability of easy-to-prepare fast food on the go is increasing. However, it's important to try and maintain a healthy lifestyle. The occasional sweet treats or junk food blowout is perfectly acceptable, but the bulk of your diet should be food that will support the ageing process and help you stay youthful.

The Mediterranean diet comes highly recommended and is packed full of fresh vegetables, fish, nuts, and olive oil. Ditch the refined sugar rubbish and replace it with whole foods, and you will soon see a difference in your waistline.

While you're eating well, you should support your body by exercising regularly. Whether you park further away from the office, head for a walk at lunchtime or hit the gym after work a couple of evenings a week, keeping mobile is one of the best ways to stave off Father Time.

You don't suddenly have to develop a seven-day-a-week gym addiction, but exercise releases feel-good chemicals, which in turn are going to help you combat the natural aches and pains that come with ageing.

3. Do look at testosterone replacement therapy

It probably doesn't come as any surprise that along with ageing comes a decrease in some of the hormones that occur naturally in the body. Testosterone is a very important male hormone, but once you hit 30, it starts to go downhill, so by the time you're in your 40s, levels can be very low.

There may not be any outward symptoms, but some people do feel slightly more depressed, find that they experience brain fog and an inability to think quickly and clearly, and generally start to feel their age. This is where testosterone replacement therapy can play a role in helping you feel younger and full of life.

It's not a quick fix, and you should still observe the other tips in the article, but replacing the testosterone levels, you can experience several positive benefits. For example, you can find it easier to build muscle mass and rid yourself of the frustrating brain fog that seems to slow everything down.

It can also help with libido problems that also occur as men get older. The ability to maintain direction and have a healthy sex drive can decrease as you get older, but testosterone replacement therapy can reset the balance and bring your libido back into action.

4. Do polish your smile

Premature dentures are not going to help you feel young or in any way confident. So, it's a good time of life to double down on your dental hygiene routine. Brush your teeth twice a day, use mouthwash and be sure to floss. If at all possible, schedule regular six-monthly dental check-ups with your dentist. Whitening teeth does help you look younger, but you need to make sure it's carried out by a professional.

Some of the home whitening kits that are sold damage the enamel and, therefore, in the long run, will make your teeth look worse. If you have already started to lose your teeth, veneers are a great investment and can boost your confidence. But again, do your research, and make sure that you work with someone highly skilled.

5. Don't smoke

We will keep this one short and to the point; everyone knows that smoking is not good for your health. But if you haven't given up yet, it's possibly not something you want to do. However, you should be aware that the smoke from cigarettes does damage the skin and cause wrinkles.

It also speeds up the ageing process, turns your teeth yellow and leaves a rather noxious taste on your breath for many hours afterwards.

So, if you really want to boost your youthful looks, it's time to break the habit.
