YOBS who threw a shopping trolley off a multi-storey car park, sending it plunging through a roof below, could have killed someone, according to a solicitor.

The trolley fell seven storeys and crashed into a storage building in The Walnuts shopping centre car park, Orpington, last week.

Nobody was in the building at the time but Graham Dobson, who works in the Crown building which adjoins the storeroom, says it was "sheer luck".

He said: "It would have taken some force to get the trolley off the car park.

"It could easily have injured or killed someone.

"The security guard was in there a short time before and he was very shaken up when he saw it.

"My staff cannot believe it and something must be done to stop it happening again."

Mr Dobson, 54, added: "Everyone who has seen the damage has been very shocked by it because the potential was there for someone to lose their life.

"I can't imagine what motivates this kind of mindless thug."

Aberdeen Property Investors owns the car park and its assets manager, Simon Andrews, said the firm is investigating the incident.

He said: "Anything to do with security and health and safety is a prime concern for us but incidents of this nature do happen from time to time.

"We are obviously pleased nobody was hurt and will be looking into what can be done, as will our security team on site."

Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident, which occurred at around noon on May 18.

A spokesman for Orpington police said: "Obviously someone could have been seriously hurt or killed in this incident and we would appeal for any witnesses to come forward."
