THE crowning glory of the Royal Navy, the HMS Queen Elizabeth, is set to arrive at Portsmouth Naval Base tomorrow morning (Wednesday).
At 65,000 tonnes, the carrier is the largest warship ever to be built in Britain and will be the latest in a long line of famous Royal Navy ships to call the port home.
She will arrive at approximately 7.10am and the naval base has spent a year and a half preparing for the moment including dredging, training, and carrying out work on the jetty.
Commodore Rigby, naval base commander, said: "There's a palpable sense of excitement around the naval base. It started when we first heard the ship was going to be based here and that means Portsmouth Naval Base knows it's got a future until the next century as a hub for maritime skills and job security and the supply chain in the area."
Both Wightlink Ferries and Hovertravel have issued revised timetables to accommodate the ship's arrival.
