ST FRANCIS achieved a hat-trick of titles as they won all three of the IW Primary Schools’ Cricket finals last week — but they were made to work for their success.
Their first win came in the under-tens final against Queensgate.
St Francis batted first and totalled 248-3 which seemed a par score. Queensgate lost a wicket with the first ball but kept chipping away at the score, despite losing more wickets, but ended 11 runs short on 237-3.
In the under-11s girls’ final, Holy Cross were the opponents.
Batting first again, St Francis scored 256-3 which looked a good score after Holy Cross bowled and fielded well. Holy Cross found batting harder against tight bowling and finished on 213-5 to lose by 43 runs but it was a closer game than the score suggests.
Then, in the under-11s final, the Ventnor school defeated Yarmouth, opening the batting and finishing on 284-3. Yarmouth looked on course to take the win but a superb double-wicket maiden in the penultimate over, restricted them to 241-4.
The under-nines tournament takes place today (Friday), which just leaves the under-11s hardball final between St Francis and Bembridge to be decided.
