SANDWICHED between two days of bad weather, was the Brian Gardener Memorial Cricket Match between Ventnor and a team of old boys.
Steephill was bathed in sun when Martin and Julie Gardener dedicated the ground’s scoreboard to their father, who had been president of the club before his death earlier this year.
Members also recognised Mr Gardener’s huge achievements in the development of the Newclose ground, used by the Ventnor first team.
The action was between current Ventnor players and Matt Compton’s XI of old boys.
His side included the likes of Somerset Academy director Steven Snell, Worcestershire player Chris Russell and recent Somerset signing Adam Hose.
Neil Westhorpe, playing for the old boys, top scored with 50 with Ian Hilsum hitting the next highest score of 34, helping Compton’s team to a total of 152-9.
George Willis with 4-28 and Dan Cox 2-38 were the pick of the Ventnor bowlers.
Henry Bartlett (51), Cano Hooneberg (34) and skipper Tom Friend (25 not out), then knocked off the modest score with seven wickets to spare.
