TRAFFIC restrictions limiting the speed and vehicle flow on New Cross Gate Bridge will be in place by next Monday (April 30).
A routine structural assessment found some parts of the bridge deck are not capable of carrying 40-ton vehicles, which are permitted on UK roads.
Interim measures will restrict traffic to certain areas of the bridge, with one lane operating in each direction and a new 20mph speed limit.
Transport for London Street Management and Railtrack are in discussions to ensure repairs start as soon as possible. Works must minimise any disruption to train services while allowing traffic to use the bridge during the day.
Motorists are advised to find alternative routes or allow more time for journeys.
