MERMAIDS and pirates descended on Appley Beach for Shipwreck Isle 2018.

The event kicked off with a procession along the seafront of castaways and scallywags, complete with cannon fire and a trial of Captain Jack Sparrow.

The day continued with stunt-action sword fighting, pirate stunt shows, and other living history displays.

Mermaids lounged in their coves while people browsed the Blackbeard Market, listened to spooky smugglers' stories, and enjoyed a tipple at the Rum Shack Bar.

Samba bands added to the atmosphere and a performance stage welcomed Jah El Collective, Derek Sandy, Double Hitch and Frankie Jah Mac.

Roger Crouch, of Shipwreck Isle, said: "It was a terrific success once again in blistering conditions. It was a true family event enjoyed by all ages and it was wonderful to see so many people dressed for the occasion.

"The highlight was the arrival in chains of Captain Jack Sparrow flanked by Red Coats and his release after superb stunt action sword fighting, which was loved by everyone.

"Many thanks to Wightlink and Visit IW for their sponsorship and great support, plus AB Bars and Events, Aaron Baker and Damian Walshe, PC Security and the marshals."
