THE STREETS of Sandown were a riot of colour and music for the town's carnival.

The children's event on Friday afternoon was followed on Saturday by the main carnival and parade, with hundreds turning out to watch the floats go by.

With a whole host of impressive costumes and some well-choreographed dance moves, the parade was a spectacle for those who attended.

Among the many groups were the Bloomfield Family and Friends, whose Toy Story themed entry was awarded the cup for most time and effort in construction, best school or community group and best overall in the main carnival.

Tanya Bloomfield said: "We have been doing carnivals for about ten years. It started off as a small group of friends and family and has grown every year.

"We now meet just before Christmas to decide what our theme will be and vote on it.

"We started putting the costumes together in January.

"My nan used to take me to carnivals, but we lost her in November, so we are going to keep doing it for her."

The Wight Strollers won the Spirit of the Carnival award for their energetic dancing with Zimmer frames for their theme, Grannies go to Vegas.

Winning the award for best fancy dress group was Fur Balls.

Sabrina Thomas, 16, of Sandown, handmade her fox costume, for which she won second prize at last year's IW Comic Con.

The adult fancy dress class was won by VJ Clarke and Eve Pearch, who went as Rimmer and Lister from Red Dwarf.

VJ said: "We are massive nerds and we love our sci fi stuff, so we had to go as Red Dwarf."

The Sandown Carnival Queens spent the afternoon at Montague House Hotel getting their hair done with junior carnival committee members, Phoebe Stevens and Sadie Wetherick, before getting on their float for the parade.
