Home Office minister Barbara Roche last week visited a project which is helping refugees living in Brent and Harrow to build new lives.

Refugees into Jobs, which is based in Carlton Avenue East, Kenton, was set up in 1997 when the two boroughs had about 14,500 refugees.

ñMany refugees are skilled workers in their own countries, such as nurses and doctors, but need to retrain so their qualifications are recognised in the UK,î said project co-ordinator Dr Anba Ali.

ñOthers need help learning English and advice and guidance on job opportunities. The emphasis of the project is to help people back onto their feet and into work.'
