Beckenham resident Bob Watson created his own little piece of history when he took part in the gruelling New York Marathon earlier this month.

Watson completed the London Marathon last year with his daughter Nicola and, in completing the course in New York with his son Danny, he can now boast the unusual achievement of running in two marathons with his two children in two centuries on two continents!

The Watsons were running in New York as part of their continued support for Imperial Cancer Research after Bobs wife Barbara was successful treated for breast cancer four years ago. She now regularly competes in the Imperial Cancer Research Funds 'Race For Life' events held regularly around the country each summer.

Bob said: "Last year, in the London Marathon, I finished together with my daughter in four hours 40 minutes.

"The course in New York was tougher with five bridges and a number of climbs, especially near the end, to contend with. It took Danny and I ten minutes longer this time."

In all, the Imperial Cancer research Fund had 140 runners from all over the United Kingdom competing, but to collect monies competitors had to run the full 26 miles 385 yards.

Bob, who is 56, also recalled one lasting memory of his trip to the Big Apple when a friendly lady in the hotel where they were staying said: "Its a good job you havent got six children!"

The Watsons now plan to hold a New Years Eve party in Beckenham which will also raise money for the Imperial Cancer Research Fund.

It will include champagne on arrival and at midnight, buffet, karaoke -disco and fireworks.

There will also be a raffle with a first prize of a holiday for two in southern Spain.

Children under 13 are admitted free with limited tickets at £30 each for adults for the great night which starts at 7.30pm.
