April 23, 2001 9:42: The British Asian community has become something of a creative force in recent years. TV shows like Goodness Gracious Me and the film East Is East give a unique and often funny take on life in the melting pot culture that is modern Britain.

Three new British Asian writers have teamed up with the Deptford-based Man Mela Theatre Company to put on a production called The Cornershop.

The show, which breaks down into three separate plays, centres around the lives and loves behind the counter of a cornershop. Aimed at a young audience, the plays tackles the culture clash that all British Asians will have gone through.

Funding by Lewisham Council and the Arts Council has allowed the Man Mela Theatre Company to take The Cornershop on the road for a 40-date tour. They have put on performances right across the country from Glasgow to Southampton and are now due to appear in Deptford.

The Cornershop will be at Deptford Green School, Amersham Vale, Deptford, on Friday, April 27. The show begins at 6.30pm and tickets are £4. Call 020 8691 3236.
