A toddler has been the cause of a lot of singing and dancing over the past few weeks and it is set to continue until this weekend.

Friends and family are deep in rehearsal for a charity variety show to raise money for the Evelina Children's Hospital Appeal, at Guy's Hospital, in appreciation for the help given to 18-month old Damian Moore.

Damian was diagnosed with a heart defect while still in the womb and will need surgery to keep replacing the part missing from his heart as he grows up. He will also need frequent check-ups and close monitoring throughout his life.

The tot loves cars and playing with animals and has just got as much energy as any other toddler despite his serious heart problem.

His mother, Lynette Ashdown, 30, was born in Bromley. She said: "He had his first heart surgery at a week old and he goes back in November, just after the show, to have more surgery."

Lynette was so grateful for the care her family received at Guy's she felt she wanted to give something back. She came up with the idea of a show and got together with her childhood dancing teacher to co-produce Music From the Heart. It is a must-see variety programme with a cast of more than 40. It features favourite tunes and dances from West End musicals.

Lewisham Operatic Society has joined in to help make the effort a success. The Great Hall at Bromley Civic Centre, where the show will be held, seats 650 and there are two performances planned.

If tickets sell well the show should raise several thousand pounds. As well as the concert there is a raffle with prizes including a shower and a signed photograph from Arsenal football team. Refreshments will be available from the licensed bar.

Fifty per cent of children with Damian's condition survive beyond the age of seven but he is doing even better than doctors expected.

Lynette said: "He seems very strong and able to deal with it all. The hospital staff are very happy with him. They did not expect him to be coping as well as he is."
