Newman holds slender lead to the finish

Troy Morris

STEVE Newman held his nerve to retain the Newport Golf Club Championship title last weekend.

He held the overnight lead with a gross 72, one shot ahead of Andy Wheeler and two shots ahead of Rob Turner, Mikey Mitchell and Simon Pilcher.

On the second day, players were dropping shots as the nerves and conditions took hold but in the end Newman managed to maintain his slender one-shot lead to the finish, Turner moving up to take second with Wheeler in third.

In the handicap, Rex Ringer took the Westridge Cup for handicaps 0 to 12, while Max Powell won the Hewitt Cup for handicaps 13 to 28.

The McKenzie Cup for the most birdies over the weekend, went to Mark King with four.

In all, more than 60 golfers took part.
