Pavements need salt in icy conditions

Friday, December 14, 2012

LETTERS From Richard Wilkins, Newport:

ON THE second day of very frosty conditions, I again witnessed children and parents resorting to try to walk in the road as the pavements were so slippery.

Cars were sliding and skidding within inches of them.

It is pure luck that someone has not yet been mown down.

I have tried to get this area a 20mph limit like other estates but the council refuse, due to cost.

Is it council’s intention to yet again leave school route areas to this situation over the winter or do we, for the first time ever, get a grit lorry visit?

I refer to the Staplers estate, Summerfields school and the walk through to Medina College, Fairmount Drive, Mayfield Drive, Cooper Road and Atkinson Drive.

I lost count of the children who have slipped up and cars skid out of control this morning. It is a very frightening thing to witness.

I guess this will be a waste of time reporting as nothing will be done until someone is hurt or killed. If I could go to council road salt area and buy a bulk load I would and gladly spread it myself.
