LETTERS From Geoff Giles, Bembridge:

IT is with sadness we heard of the death of Michael Winner.

But there is a little known fact about him missed by the tabloids.

Every time a police officer was murdered or killed on duty around the UK, Michael would pay for a memorial stone to be placed as near the scene of the incident as possible and also pay for a memorial service at the unveiling of the stone.

All around the country, sometimes in the middle of housing estates or in the countryside, there are these memorial stones.

A friend and former colleague of mine has such a memorial after he was shot dead chasing bank robbers. I hope another entrepreneur will take up this kind action.
