SHOPPERS in Edmonton Green on Saturday, October 10, might have noticed the latest plans for the management of the shopping centre, which were on display.

While all credit must be given to the management company for taking the time to listen to the views of users of Edmonton Green, one aspect of the plans raises concerns.

The main feature of the plans is a new large store, which would be built on the site of the existing Edmonton Leisure Centre.

A new leisure centre would then be built at the front of the Green, on the site of the disused multi-storey car park.

Quite apart from the major question as to who will pay for the new leisure centre, it is not difficult to imagine a situation where building the new store and earning money on it takes priority over building a replacement leisure centre.

In these circumstances, there is a danger that the new facilities are a long time coming or that when they do, they are not as good. After all, it has taken a long time for Enfield Town's swimming pool to be replaced -- and that still hasn't been built.

The original plans for the shopping centre envisaged the new store being built on the car park site. This would leave the leisure centre well alone.

Plans to improve Edmonton Green are very welcome but local residents must not lose out!
