Wood flies for header

Hampton 2 - Bromley 1

Hampton gathered a very useful three points when they defeated an experienced mid-table Bromley 2-1 at the Beveree on Saturday.

In an overall good team performance the Beavers were particularly grateful for three players who have stepped up from the reserves, Peter Barnsby, Chris James and Hakan Altinok.

Influence

In the fifth minute Altinok was put through, took the ball round Bromley's keeper Phil Smith, and shot from a very tight angle which Smith just managed to divert for a corner.

Minutes later Altinok received the ball from Craig Reilly and laid the ball into James's path, only for Peter Wood to fail to finish a strong cross.

After dominating the early part of the game Hampton deserved to take the lead in the 22nd minute following a corner on the right.

Wood's perfectly delivered cross was headed home by Barnsby at the near post as he soared higher than the defenders to head the ball past Smith.

Wordsworth continued to look dangerous for Bromley and nearly barrelled his way through the Hampton defence in the 30th minute before being crowded out.

Slip

An unusual slip by Russell allowed Bromley the chance to equalise in the 37th minute. He came for a cross and failed to hold the ball, allowing it to drop into a cluster of Hampton and Bromley players and in amongst the log-jam Bromley's full back Matt Woolf forced the ball over the line.

The first half was only three minutes old when a strong header from Hutchins thumped against the Bromley crossbar.

James later made a strong run into the penalty area and went down heavily, hoping perhaps for a penalty award but the ball ran off the defender for a corner instead.

But from the corner Hampton scored their second goal and once again it was the trusty left foot of Wood that provided the perfect cross for James to rise and thump home a bullet-like header from six yards.

Smith managed to get a hand to it but was unable to stop its progress into the roof of the net.

No applause for referee's `encore'

Raynes Park Vale 2 - Chess and Hook Utd 1

How long does it take for a corner to be taken?

The referee decided it takes three seconds, and so proceeded to stop his watch after playing seven minutes overtime, to let Raynes Park take the corner - which was defended twice - and force the ball over the line.

The referee then blew for time, without even taking the kick-off, something that questions the referee's interpretation of the rules - but won't change the result!

The home side scored as early as the fifth minute after a mix-up by Chessington's defence and keeper Jason Hopper allowed a roving forward to tuck the ball away.

After a sticky patch for Chessington , Andy Bazin found himself put through by a great pass and ran on to unleash an unstoppable shot to score the equaliser for Chessington after 30 minutes.

Raynes Park dominated the play in the second half without creating any clear cut chances.

Chances

Indeed, it was Chessington who had the better chances. Clive Gash found himself clear on the right, only to shoot over the bar, and Neil Wicks then ran on from a Simon Coffey through ball, only to see his shot blocked by a defender for a corner.

The referee then took over for his "encore" at the end of this hard fought fixture!

Far too Casual for Cup

Thetford Town 3 - Corinthian Casuals 2

FA Carlsberg Vase 1st Round

Shocking is the only word to describe this Casuals performance.

Thetford - of Jewson League Division One - ended the Casuals short Vase run coming from behind to win in dramatic fashion.

It was a game which the Casuals should have won but for missed chances and Thetford's determination.

Mark Freeborough scored for the Casuals after 63 minutes, followed by another from Raishbrook. But Thetford made it one-way traffic from here on in, making Casuals' keeper Offer rue his side's poor marking.

Georgiou's at it again

Purfleet 5 - Hampton 0

Hampton returned to Purfleet four weeks after having lost 4-0 there in a Ryman League game only to suffer from an extreme case of déjà-vu.

Purfleet's centre forward George Georgiou was responsible for three of the Purfleet goals, his first coming in the 14th minute after meeting a low cross from the bye-line at the near post.

Early chances for Hampton failed to come to anything. A Jason Brown cross just brushed Chris James's head but he was unable to direct the header goalwards, and Nick Burton's shot curled away from goal.

On the hour, a Purfleet crossfield pass missed out the Hampton defence and Georgiou scored his second under Mark Russell's body. His third came in the 72nd minute.

Purfleet went the length of the field for David Crown to slot home number four. The ex-Bromley player clinched his second goal after another long-range attack.

Hippolyte did hit a shot from a tight angle into the side netting but Hampton were well out of it by then.
