Praise for ‘dazzling’ concert

Friday, September 9, 2011 - 10:15

MUSICTHE Island’s top vocal talent came together for the All Wight Music Extravaganza in aid of charity last week.
Featuring the likes of Lucid, the Medina Community Choir and Island Community Glee Club, the Medina Theatre audience was treated to a feast of great music and musicianship featuring Island talent at its best.
They soaked up the jazzy sounds of Louis Checkley, 21, and soloists Amy Fleming, 20, and Khia Janzen, 20, with songs from the stage and screen by Harriet Back, 12, Lizzie Back, 15, Jacqui Beck, 17, Cyrus Dean, 17, and Charles Johnson as well as beautiful, original material by Laura Reid.
The evening was skilfully accompanied by Ian Reid on piano and Jamie Woodford on percussion.
The Medina Community Choir performed a small selection of their repertoire classics, including Circle of Life and Bohemian Rhapsody.
The exciting programme climaxed with a tribute to the hit West End show, Les Miserables with performances that matched quality to be found on Broadway by Blue Brown, Sunny Brown, Ollie Dulcie, Cyrus, Khia and Charles.
The evening was put on at the request of world-renowned consultant physician Dr Arun Baksi to support two charities he holds very close to his heart — Care for Destitute Children in India and IW Diabetes Voluntary Group.
Concert organiser Hannah Brear said: "One thing is for sure, it was a truly amazing evening.
"We didn’t quite sell out but words like 'spellbound’, 'awesome’, 'dazzling’, 'unbelievable’ have been flooding into messages of thanks on our website e-mail."
The audience were all on their feet in a standing ovation at the end of the show, which raised almost £3,000 to be divided between the two charities.
Following the success of this year’s concert, the theatre has already been booked for a repeat performance on Wednesday, August 29, 2012.
