THE FIRST land Adam Pereira saw in seven weeks was the Statue of Liberty coming into view.
Battling strong head winds, the professional sailor and diabetes sufferer, from Ventnor, sailed 3,500 miles to raise money for Diabetes UK.
He is the first person with Type 1 diabetes to sail solo across the Atlantic.
Having left the Royal London Yacht Club, Cowes, on June 17, Adam dropped anchor off Liberty Island on August 5 at 7.29am.
Adam is now sailing home, hoping to arrive in Cowes early next month.
Adam, 49, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at 33.
He said: "The trip has been tough. Head winds accounted for a zig-zag route.
"Almost two months alone at sea has been mentally challenging, as has the daily diet of rice and veg.
"Because I have Type 1 diabetes, getting a quick energy fix is paramount, so my mum's fruitcakes have really kept me going - she made 12 cakes.
"There have been some memorable moments, such as a dolphin swimming beside the boat.
"Most people raised their eyebrows when I told them what I was planning, so that first view of the New York skyline and the Statue of Liberty was surreal - a wow moment I shall always cherish."
Charlotte Harrison-Webb, of Diabetes UK, said: "Adam is one of a kind. He's amazing.
"No-one with Type 1 diabetes has ever sailed single-handed across the Atlantic. His achievement is just brilliant. So many weeks at sea enduring all types of adverse weather and tricky sailing conditions - what a hero. Everyone at Diabetes UK is in awe of him."
