FIREFIGHTERS from Freshwater and Yarmouth came together for a minute’s silence to pay tribute to the Grenfell Tower fire victims and to support their emergency services’ colleagues.
They met for drill outside Freshwater Fire Station on Tuesday and were supported by Freshwater Parish Council and a large number of residents.
Freshwater Fire Station watch manager Steve Moran said: “The minute’s silence was not about us. It was about the victims of the tragedy and us paying respect to all members of the emergency service, firefighters, ambulance and the police.

“We put the minute's silence up on our Facebook page, it was not about publicity for us and we were taken aback by how many people turned up.
“After the silence, we went to visit a home in Kendal Road which suffered a kitchen fire over the weekend.
“This is something we do all the time to help our community. If there is a fire in a home we return and speak to the occupants and offer them advice on how to prevent it again.
“We all live here and want the public to come to us for advice. We are very approachable and would prefer to prevent, rather than put out a fire.”
