ACADEMIC progress in Isle of Wight secondary schools was judged to be below average, league table data shows.

Data published for eight of the eleven schools on the Island showed that four schools were classed as below average, with Sandown Bay Academy judged to be well below the national average.

Christ the King College was the best performing school, classed as average with a Progress 8 score of -0.06.

These scores mean that while pupils at IW secondary schools did make progress, their progress was not as high as the national average.

The Priory School, and Ryde School did not publish data because of their Independent school status. The results for St Catherine's School were suppressed due to the low student numbers and the St George's School and the Island Free School did not have any data available.

Schools are judged by two recently introduced measures: Progress 8 and Attainment 8.

Both Progress 8 and Attainment 8 focus on the results of a pupil's best eight GCSE results including English and maths.

Progress 8 compares pupils' key stage four results to those of other pupils nationally with similar prior achievement based on KS2 results. The Attainment 8 score is calculated with points accorded to grades a pupil achieves for all their 8 best results — English and maths are double weighted to signify their importance.

The new graded GCSEs in English and maths — graded one to nine — are also included in performance tables.

Education bosses have said the secondary school performance tables could not be compared with previous years, due to the change in examinations and grading.
